Ocean Education & Activism

Rising ocean temperatures, ocean acidification, and carbon dioxide levels continue to severely impact coral reefs and fishing communities. The ocean is our support system; it contains 97% of our water, generates half our our oxygen, and provides 1/6 of the protein we eat. Our mission is to foster meaningful ocean education for students in order to build a community of learners who are caring ocean citizens.

OUR TEAM

We are an interdisciplinary team of students at Stanford University, with expertise in earth systems, education, and data analytics, ranging from 1st year to graduate level. Growing up in both land-locked and ocean communities, we are united by our care for the ocean and the people and ecosystems it touches. In partnership with the Stanford d.school, we strive to continue learning from the expertise of the ocean community and help to frame the significance of coral reefs and oceans to students.

"I stand with oceans and coral reefs because they are some of the most impactful

ecosystems on the planet.  From the water cycle, to carbon storage to fisheries

that support communities worldwide, oceans are integral to the existence of life on Earth.

"I stand with oceans and coral reefs, because growing up in a land-locked community, my experience with the ocean was limited to Finding Nemo and the occasional coast trip; I want every student to be able to experience its beauty."

"I stand with oceans and coral reefs because. we are all interconnected: the reefs, the rainforests, and the lives we lead. Nothing matches the splendor and magic of a reef ecosystem. "

WHY OUR COMMUNITY STANDS WITH OCEANS

Garrett, Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire

There is so much life beneath the ocean's surface. So often I feel that people around the world do not even think about what is below the ocean; either that, or they think the only creatures living in the ocean are scary sharks. By arming students with this knowledge, I think students will be encouraged to be curious and explore the water.

Natalie, High School Student

I love the ocean because it is home to the earth’s greatest gifts.

Claire, Diver

Everything in the ocean is interconnected. For example, hammerhead sharks often eat stingrays and oysters and clams, so countries that kill sharks for delicacies like shark fin soup reduce the predator population in the food chain. With fewer sharks int he ocean the stingray population explodes, and as a result they consume more oysters and clams, which are foods that humans rely on as well.
